Phone 101: Jailbreaking and Unlocking

It is 2013 and most people have replaced their basic phones with high powered smartphones.  Smartphones can use the internet, social sites, the latest games, and much more.  There are almost endless possibilities of what you can do with your phone.  But of course there are some restrictions on what you can do.  But did you know there is a way to eliminate some of those restrictions.  I want to take this time to tell you all about unlocking cellphones.

First let's go over what unlocking phones means.  Most phones have a "lock" button to turn off the screen. That is not what I am talking about.  Unlocking a phone means you remove the restrictions on the SIM card inside the phone.  Why would you want to do this?  Well, it removes the restrictions that force you to use a specific carrier or service.  This results in the ability to use any cellphone with any carrier.  And by that I am talking on a global level.  So unlocking your phone allows you to use it internationally with the carrier of your choice.

Next let's discuss how to actually unlock your phone.  The first option is to do it yourself.  If you are a technical kind of person, it is not too difficult, but you shouldn't try this if you are not technical at all.  Since unlocking a phone can void the warranty, you need to be careful not to break anything or you will be wasting money.  Jailbreaking is usually a prerequisite to unlocking though, and gets rid of many other restrictions that No Jailbreaking phones have.  There is free phone unlocking software online that will make the process easier.  And there are plenty of video/picture guides and walkthroughs available if you just do a quick search on the internet.

If you don't know what you are doing, I suggest option number two-paying someone else to do it for you.  Just search online for unlocking services and you will find lots of websites with fair prices.  This is great if you are not very technical and don't want to risk messing up your phone.  But it is important to act rationally and do your research first. Never hand over your money unless you have researched the website and found positive reviews first. Click here for the safest solution.

There is one final option though. You can buy a phone that is already unlocked.  Some people don't want to unlock a phone, so they just get an unlocked phone that they can set up with any carrier they like.  Go to any phone store and you may be able to find some unlocked phones for sale.  But for the best selection, I recommend shopping online.  If you want an unlocked phone, you can get the latest models, but be prepared to spend a bit more money for a newly released phone that is unlocked.
